"The Kiss" retold in Death's POV

She was defending me. Intelligent, honest, talented, and compassionate. No one had ever defended me. The silly blond in my arms let out a trill of giggles unappealingly similar to the sound of fingernails on a chalkboard. This isn’t where I wanted to be. I’d stayed because of Pagan. Being near her, watching her, touching her, those were all the reasons I’d made this choice. Yet, here I stood forcing myself to tolerate the annoying girl draping her body against mine.

The door to the gym opened as Pagan shot one last look my way then disappeared outside. What was she thinking? She didn’t need to be alone. She knew this. Glaring angrily toward the boy she’d left behind, I almost felt sympathy toward him. He hadn’t meant to upset her. But the simple fact their fight was over me gave me some ridiculous amount of joy.

“Go play with your friends for awhile Kendra,” I ordered before detaching myself from her claws. I needed to guard Pagan.

If I didn’t know better I’d swear she wasn’t real. The gulf breeze caused her hair to gently dance around her shoulders giving her an ethereal appearance. The confusion, sadness, anger were all rolling off her in waves. Knowing I had something to do with those emotions pained me.

“Why aren’t you inside dancing with your date?” I asked. Her head snapped up and relief flickered in her eyes before she shrugged and turned her gaze from mine so she could stare at her feet.

“He’s looking rather forlorn sitting at a table all alone,” I said softly hoping to defuse the real reason I was here. She did’t need to know how desperately I needed to be near her. She shrugged again and continued to study her feet. I couldn’t keep from letting the amused laughter escape me. Her attempt at acting as if she wasn’t just as happy to have me alone as I was to have her all to myself was cute. “So, have you decided to try the ignoring me thing again, to see if I go away?”

Biting her bottom lip, she shook her head no. “I know that doesn’t work with you.”

“Why are you out here, Pagan? What’s wrong?” I wanted to hear her say it. Why? I wasn’t sure. It would only torture me further. But I needed to know she desired me too. “Nothing that concerns you,” she tartly replied.

Grinning at her attempt to act indifferent when I could hear her heart racing in her chest, I managed to keep from out right laughing.

“Really?” I asked

“Really.”

I closed the distance between us, “Seeing me dance with Kendra doesn’t bother you?”

She shook her head and her chest began rising and falling erratically with each quick breath. I let my eyes travel down her dress and enjoyed the simple fact she’d bought it for me. I’d suggested this color. This dress hadn’t been bought for the quarterback. The need to growl my approval was overwhelming.

“I knew pale pink would suit you. Most girls can’t pull it off but on you it’s perfect.”

Her pale throat constricted as she swallowed hard. I affected her. I reveled in that knowledge.

“You think I don’t want to touch you the way I touch Kendra. You’re right.”

Pagan stepped back away from me. The pain in her eyes almost brought me to my knees. I hadn’t meant to hurt her. Immediately, I reached out and grabbed her hand and pulled her against me. This was what I’d tried so hard to keep from happening. The more we touched the stronger my need to possess her became. But right now, I needed to erase the look in her eyes. Nothing else mattered.

"When I touch Kendra I mentally cringe at having to continue to pull off the farce of being interested in her. When I can’t control my need for you and allow myself to touch you it ignites a monster inside of me that I’m afraid I’ll lose control over. You make me feel things I’ve never felt before. Something happens,” I paused and let my gaze drop to her full pink lips, “when I’m near you like this.” I couldn’t stop myself. I needed more. Gently I ran my thumb over her bottom lip. The silky texture caused a sharp hot painful need to grip me. I closed my eyes from the intoxicating sight of her mouth and tried hard to fight for control. “And when you react the way you do, I feel the clawing inside me to take what I want.”

The soft warm breaths against my thumb might as well have been iron bars wrapping around me pulling me toward her. Making me hers. Opening my eyes, I stared directly into hers. I needed her to understand. To let me go.

“You’re the one thing I want the most in the world yet the one thing I cannot have. Because to have you completely would be impossible. You can’t go where I walk.” Unable to step away, I cradled her face in my hands. “The purpose of my existence is not to have a mate. It is lonely and cold. Until now it has been all I’ve known. Then you became the appointed and everything changed.”

Something irreparable was happening. I couldn’t harm her. I wasn’t meant for her. Terrified I’d gone too far, risked her life with my obsessive need, I quickly stepped away from her. Desperate to save her from myself.

“Go, Pagan. Run, please, run. I am not what you think I am. I am not ‘intelligent, honest, talented, and compassionate’ although hearing you say those words in my defense felt like warm liquid pouring through my cold veins. You want to know what I am and I can’t tell you. If you knew, I wouldn’t have to beg you to run.”

I needed to leave now. This was a mistake. As I began walking off, I heard her running after me. Didn’t she hear me? I’d told her so much more than she was supposed to know. Stopping, I slowly turned back around and glared at her. Maybe fear was the only solution. But the instant I saw it flicker across her face, I recoiled. I couldn’t scare her. Souls feared me. But not her. Never her. That wasn’t what I wanted.

“I don’t care what you are,” she stated loudly taking a step toward me, “You can’t scare me off and I’m not running away. What is it the song you sing to me says? ‘Yet you stay. Holding on to me, yet you stay, reaching out a hand that I push away. The cold is not meant for you yet you stay, you stay, you stay. When I know it’s not right for you’."

She’d memorized my words to her. My chest felt as if someone had ripped it in two.

“Go, Pagan. Now. I can’t control myself much longer,” I managed to whisper through my pain.

Instead, she took another cautious step toward me. The pleading look in her eyes was my undoing. How could I stay away? A growl erupted from my chest and I seized her in one swift movement. My mouth was on hers instantly. I needed to know her flavor. To experience it. This was the only chance I’d have to taste her and I wanted it all. I nipped her bottom lip then gently soothed the bite with my tongue. She was delicious. She was exotic. I needed more. Her small hands grabbed handfuls of my shirt and I wanted to roar in triumph. I was no longer in control of my choices. Pagan was. I’d do anything to keep her. The sweet taste that I could give no label because it was uniquely hers consumed me.

Somewhere in the haze of the ecstasy I sensed danger. But Pagan controlled me now. Her soul owned me. I began tasting the soft skin along her neck as words Death should never promise anyone spilled from my lips. The touch of her hands sent a tremble through me as she grabbed my face and claimed my mouth. More. I needed more. Mine. She was mine. Then I recognized the danger. Her soul was releasing from her body. With each hungry touch from Death she relinquished herself to me. Terror washed over me as I jerked out of her embrace and stepped back.

“I can’t, Pagan. I want this so damn bad. But I can’t.”

Before she could stop me, I fled.

That First Kiss

It's the month for love. Valentine's Day is upon us. Candy hearts, chocolates, roses, and jewelry rein supreme. And in the spirit of the holiday the Paranormal Plumes are each taking one day leading up to Valentines and posting about their first kiss. OR in my case the first kiss that mattered. My first kiss wasn't very memorable or enjoyable so writing about it seemed pointless. However, the first kiss that mattered happened my junior year of high school.
The first time I met him, he had braces and sat quietly in the back of my fourth grade class. His mother worked for my mother. So therefore, he didn't even rank on my radar screen. However, time changed things. Fast forward to my junior year of high school. The "brace face" in the back of the class was now the starting point guard on the basketball team and walked the halls of our high school with an obnoxious cocky strut. I hated him. He drove me crazy. He was so dang hot.
One afternoon, in my Chemistry class, I was moved across the room from my assigned seat because I wouldn't shut up talking to the guy beside me. My teacher, being the comedian that he was, decided to put me beside Keith, the cocky point guard. The one who I couldn't help but watch from afar and completely ignore if he ever thought I might be looking his way. My teacher actually said, "Take that seat beside Keith. We all know you won't talk to him."
Before that class was over, Keith had leaned over to me and said, "So, after the game Friday night why don't you go out with me." I was completely prepared to say, "Not on your life," but instead replied, "Um, okay."
We won that game and he was in an excellent mood on our date. Everything about him surprised me. He was nothing like I'd expected him to be. It was the first time I'd laughed so hard that my side hurt on a date. Then came the moment he brought me home. It was the first time I'd ever seen Keith nervous. He always seemed so sure of himself. But the indecision was all over his face. Being the ever helpful person that I am, I took matters into my own hands and leaned in and kissed him. And being the ever talented romeo that he was, he took over.
Eighteen years later we are still going strong. Three kids, a mortgage, two cars, and wonderful memories make that one incredible first kiss.

Existence excerpt - retold in Dank's POV

Fear hung heavy in the air. Pagan was unaware I’d followed her home. She didn’t trust my promise to keep her safe. That simple truth infuriated me. Feeling fear was a part of my life. My presence created fear. I was immune to the familiar bitter taste it left in my mouth. But Pagan’s fear bothered me. I didn’t like it.

I stood in her doorway watching as she nibbled on her bottom lip nervously. This was not how it was supposed to be. I’d saved her from death. Fear shouldn’t be an emotion she had to deal with anymore.

“What’s wrong?” I asked. Her scream died almost instantly as her eyes focused on me.

“Dank,” she gasped pressing her hand against her heart. I could hear it racing inside her chest from across the room.
“Sorry, I didn’t realize you were so wound up about this.” I walked into the room, watching her closely as she sank back down onto the bed she’d jumped up from when I’d startled her.

“Well excuse me if strange souls showing up in my house, talking to me and touching me freak me out a little.” She shot me an accusatory look, “Then, I ask you about it and you curse into the darkness and get all angry.”
Damn. It always came back to this. She wanted to know too much. Things I couldn’t tell her. I needed to keep her safe. Knowledge was dangerous. Needing to be near her, I sat down beside her on the small bed. The smell of honey warmed me. Her hair always smelled completely edible.

“I’m sorry about that. I shouldn’t have scared you that way.”

“Well, can you tell me what is happening, who she is?”

I shook my head turning my eyes away from her. If I let myself look into those pleading dark pools of hers, I’d cave. “No, that’s the only thing I can’t do for you. Ask me anything else in the world, Pagan, and I’ll make sure it’s yours but that I cannot do.”

She sighed and sat up straighter, “Why’re you here, then?”

Because they were trying to fix what I’d done. They wouldn’t just leave it alone. I was Death. I could decide to allow life. It was my choice. I made it my choice. But I couldn’t tell her any of that.
“Until I know everything is fine...until I take care of what must be done, I’ll be spending the nights here in your room.” I turned my eyes back to hers and held her gaze. I wanted her to understand that she had nothing to fear.

“I have to protect you,” I paused then motioned toward the door, “If you want to take that shower, I’ll make sure you’re completely safe while you do so.”
Relief came over her face then a small frown quickly replaced it. “Can you read my mind?”

She didn’t want me reading her thoughts. Interesting. “Not exactly. It’s more like I can feel your fears so strongly I can hear them.”

She studied me for a moment as if remembering something that confused her.

“You heard me in the cafeteria when you were with Kendra, I wasn’t scared then.”
Ah, yes I felt her fear that day. I’d reveled in that fear. Knowing she cared about the blond flirting with me eased the ache in my chest caused from the sight of her snuggled up against Leif’s side.

“You weren’t?” I asked unable to keep the smirk off my face.

Her face turned an adorable shade of red before she spun around and rushed out of the room.

“Why’re you slamming things?” Amanda asked stepping out of my bedroom.

I shrugged not wanting to share with my sister how I was having a small melt down over a girl I’d just met while we had bigger issues to deal with.

“Does it have anything to do with the girl’s voice I just heard in here with Preston?”

Slumping into a kitchen chair I glanced up at her intending to tell her “no” and instead replied, “yeah”

Amanda frowned at me and pulled the chair across from me out from under the table before sitting in it.

“Is Preston dating her?”

“No, not if he doesn’t want a death wish.”
Amanda’s eyebrows shot up in surprise, “You mean you like her enough to fight Preston over her?”

“Not me. Cage. He thinks he’s going to marry Low.”

Amanda laughs, “Cage married? Has he gone from smoking pot to crack recently?”

It sounded ludicrous to me too but she hadn’t seen him with Willow. He was different with her. He actually gave a shit.

“It’s complicated.”

Amanda picked at the red fringe on the placemat in front of her. The placemats were just another one of those small touches around this place that Willow had a hand in. Preston was as bad as Cage when it came to women. I hated knowing he was out with Willow.

“I need to get home to Mom. I’d say you could come with me but the awful scowl on your face would frighten her. You need to go get changed into something sexy and go after the girl. Preston wouldn’t have taken her if he knew you liked her this much. Heck , he probably took her somewhere just to get her out of the apartment for our sake.”

She was right. At least, I hoped she was right. I stood up and glanced down at the faded jeans and Alabama football t-shirt I had on.

“What’s wrong with the way I’m dressed?”

Amanda sighed and stood up. “Come on my clueless brother. I’ll make you look irresistible. Trust me, okay. I mean the last girl you liked you completely let slip through your fingers. I’d say you need my help.”

“I was up against a rock star Manda. It wasn’t exactly a fair game.”

Amanda shrugged, “Maybe so but Preston and Cage are no Jax Stone. This time you’re definitely the hottie in the group.”

“Did you just call me a hottie? And Jax isn’t better looking than me. He’s just famous.”

Amanda let out a loud cackle of laughter.

“No brother dear Jax Stone is hotness incarnate with or without the guitar and sexy as hell singing voice. You never stood a chance. He was what you call playing with the big dogs. This time you’re definitely playing within your league.”

The Writing Cave

Well the kids are back in school this morning and the house is quiet once again. I am going to finish up Because of Low and send it off to the editor. Then I will be able to put all my focus on Predestined. Once Predestined is complete and in edits. I am going to write a sequel to The Vincent Boys. At first I thought I'd write Sawyer a story but I've decided Beau, Ashton, and Sawyer still have story to tell. They will all be in college soon and so much can happen there. So, by the time July rolls around I intend to release the sequel to TheVincent Boys. Beau is just too well loved not to give him more story.

You would think after helping save her boyfriend from an eternity in Hell that things would go back to normal. Well, as normal as life can be when you can see souls and your boyfriend is Death. But for Pagan Moore, things are just getting weirder.

The high school quarterback and reigning heartthrob, Leif Montgomery, is missing. While the town is in a frenzy of worry, Pagan is a nervous wreck for other reasons. Apparently good ‘ol Leif isn’t your average teenage boy. He isn’t even human. According to Death, Leif doesn’t have a soul. The quarterback may have skipped town but he’s still showing up in Pagan’s dreams... uninvited.

Dank has known from the beginning Leif wasn’t human. But he hadn’t worried about a simple soulless creature. Now, he realizes he made a grave mistake. Pagan’s soul has been marked since birth as a restitution, to a spirit so dark not even Death walks near it. Dank knows saving Pagan’s soul won’t be easy but Pagan is his. And he’s already proven he’ll defy Heaven to keep her. If Hell wants a piece of him too, then bring it on.

Callum & Harper "The 25 Day Tour of Bad Aces"

Life sucks for orphans Callum Tate and Harper Bailey.

Kicked out of their foster homes because they suffer the 'eighteen disease' with nothing but a hundred dollar check from the government and a pat on the back, they're forced to rely on a system that failed them miserably.

So they sit. They sit inside Social Services, waiting for their social workers to call their names and offer them the miracle they know will never come but they sit anyway because they have nowhere else to go, no other options on their very literal and figurative empty plates.

But as they sit, they notice the other. Although captivated, they each come to the conclusion that life is complicated enough without throwing in a boiling tension that can't ever be acted upon because they're both too busy thinking about where their next meal will come from but when their names are called and both are placed on a year long waiting list for permanent housing, suddenly relying on each other seems like a very viable plan B.

And, oh, how lovely Plan B's can be.

Well, except for the psycho from Harper's past that haunts her and, oh, yeah, there's the little issue that neither of them knows they're in love with the other.

Needless to say, Callum & Harper's life just got a bit more complicated.

Fisher Amelie resides in the South with her kick ace husband slash soul mate. She earned her first 'mama' patch in 2009. She also lives with her Weim, 'Jonah', and her Beta, 'Whale'. All these living creatures keep the belly of her life full, sometimes to the point of gluttony, but she doesn't mind all that much because life isn't worth living if it isn't entertaining, right?

Fisher grew up writing. She secretly hid notebooks and notebooks of dribble in a large Tupperware storag container in her closet as a kid. She didn't put two and two together until after college where it suddenly dawned on her,
"Hey, I like writing". She's a bit dense.
"No, I'm not."
"Yes, you are. Put down that Oreo, your butt can't take any more."
"You're rude."
"Yeah, yeah."

Hello! My name is Fisher Amelie and I am on day 24 of my 25 Day Tour of Bad Aces. Today's post isn't just cool because Abbi is hosting me, although that does sincerely rock, but it's also wicked good because I'll be announcing the winner to the Callum & Harper Giveaway Contest! Woot! Woot!

But before we get to the goods, you must suffer through a ridiculous interview. Now, for most of the tour, my characters have interviewed each other or I've interviewed them, right? Well not today! Today, my characters get a chance to interview...me.

Let's get this party started!

Callum: Sure, I'll get started, just as soon as you sign this contract here.
Harper: (Laughs)
Fisher: *Snatches thick ream of paper* What is this?
Callum: It's a waiver. By signing on the dotted line, you hereby waive any and all creative license for a period of one year where the characters of Callum & Harper are concerned. For example, this means you may not give us terrible rashes, halitosis, or stick us into the tops of trees for an undetermined amount of days.
Fisher: Egad! You're serious! I was only joking when I threatened those things. I would never do that, Callum.
Callum: Nevertheless, it must be signed.
Fisher: *Blows bangs from eyes, scribbles her initials on the line* Fine. Happy now?
Charlie, Cherry, Harper, Callum: *Breathes sigh of relief*
Fisher: Sheesh! Had I known you all took my threats seriously, I would have demanded a bit more than good behavior from you lot!
Charlie: Sit, Mrs Amelie. I have a question for you.
Fisher: *Sits, gets stared at by four pairs of angry eyes, shrinks into herself, gulps* Go on, then.
Charlie: Why are you such a mean old hag?
Cherry: Charlie!
Charlie: *looks at Cherry* What?
Fisher: What do you mean, Charlie?
Charlie: The stuff you wrote about us is awful. Why?
Fisher: *Sighs* Oh, Charlie. Don't you know? I don't write you. I observe you. Your decisions and the terrible things that happen to you are all of your own making.
Harper: What! I did not choose to become an orphan!
Fisher: I wasn't implying that, silly. I am just trying to explain to you that your story wrote itself, dear. Besides, I seem to remember a few amazing moments in the book as well. Oh how quickly you forget!
Callum: *Blushes* Yeah. *Clears throat* There were some pretty cool things.
Fisher: See?
Cherry: *Laughs* Remember that day tha...
Fisher: Shhhh! You'll give away the story, Cherry Bomb!
Harper: Tell me what day you're thinking of, Cherry.
Cherry: *Cups hand over Harper's ear, whispers*
Harper: *Eyes widen, swallows hard* Yup. That was some day.
Callum: *Eyes Harper* What did she say? Tell me. I hate being left out.
Harper: Oh, nothing, nothing. No big deal. I'll, uh, I'll tell you later. Moving on, moving on.
Charlie: Oh, this is rich. If it's got Harper in a tizzy, I have to know. Tell me Cherry.
Harper: *Grabs Cherry's sleeve* Do it and I'll murder your plants.
Cherry: *Narrows eyes* You wouldn't dare.
Harper: I would. *Looks around with shifty eyes, speaks the rest under her breath* And I might even be tempted to spill a few beans myself, there, Cherry!
Cherry: *Turns abruptly Fisher's direction* So! Fisher! Christmas is just around the corner. What are you getting the hubs?
Charlie, Callum: *groans*
Fisher: Oh, uh, well, I haven't gotten anything yet. I've been rather busy.
Callum: Dang, I'd hate to be your husband. *High fives Charlie*
Fisher: *Stares daggers into Callum* You'd love it or you'd learn to love it. Capice?
Callum: *Eyes suddenly go wide* Yikes! I mean!...Cool? *Shrugs into himself, squeaks* Remember the contract!
Fisher: One year, Callum Tate.
Harper: Tell me, Fisher, why us? Why choose our story to tell?
Fisher: Because, Harper, yours is one of the best ones I could think to tell the world. I'd met so many wonderful kids that were in your predicament once, a long time ago, and their lives were something I could never move past. They were interesting, incredible, young people. Their lives were some of the hardest I'd ever heard lived and yet so many others hadn't heard of their trials, your trials. When I really got to thinking about it, I sort of thought that since many foster kids are considered 'troublemakers', society feels they are lost causes but I know that to be untrue. You and Callum are some of the best kids I know because you were forced to forge your own way. You are hard working, generous, and compassionate because you grew up in the worst possible way. You forged ahead of your plights and decided to tackle the world instead of asking the world to hoist you up.
You are my inspirations...in more ways than the bite it took to write your story.
Callum, Cherry, Charlie, Harper: *Stare dumbly at Fisher, mouths ajar*
Fisher: *Shifts uncomfortably* Right then! I suppose it's time to get going. Thank you for having us Abbi!
Callum, Cherry, Charlie, Harper: *Shake themselves awake*
Harper: Yes, thank you, Abbi!
Callum, Cherry, Charlie, Harper, Fisher: *All proceed to walk out*
Charlie: Sorry for calling you an old hag.
Fisher: *Wraps arm around Charlie's waist* It's okay. Just remember, never judge a book by it's cover.

The Ascended Book Tour

It's my day to post a little goodie from The Ascended book tour. And what do I have? An excerpt! Here ya go….

"A sentence that starts with ‘Shawn had a plan,’ is never a good sign," Mark said with a chuckle.

"If I didn't feel like a bus just ran me over, followed by a Mack truck, I might argue with you," I said, trying to find the strength to turn my head to look at him.

"Then why did you risk it?" He asked, angling my body so he could peer down into my eyes. "To help the other Guides and Protectors?" He probed.

"You know why," I said, feeling flushed. What if I had misread the situation? What if he had no feelings left for me now that our link was gone? I looked down at my hands, mortified. I was so stupid. Why hadn't I transported somewhere else, somewhere useful, where I could have helped the others? Instead, I let my feelings override everything else.

"Krista look at me," he pleaded quietly.

I shook my head no as my face burned out of control.

"Krista," he said again, using two of his fingers to lift my chin. I tried to avoid eye contact, afraid of the pity I would see there. The pad of his thumb swiped away a lone tear that had escaped without me noticing. He moved his thumb further down until it gently caressed my bottom lip.

"Krista, you have to look at me," he said more urgently.

"Why?" I whispered.

"Because, I need to look in your eyes before I kiss you," he murmured.

I pulled my eyes up finally and was lost as he lowered his mouth to mine. I kept my eyes locked on his until the last possible moment. They finally fluttered closed as he kissed me like never before. We had always had our share of passion from the supernatural link we shared, but this made every other kiss feel like child's play as Mark plundered my mouth with his own. I gasped as he nipped on my lip, encouraging me to open completely to him. His mouth was familiar in so many ways and yet I could feel multiple layers that had never been there before.

Teen Rock Star vs Teen Movie Star- Celebrity Interview

Yesterday I sat down with two teenage heartthrobs outside the Beverly Hills mansion hardly ever inhabited anymore by rocker Jax Stone enjoying the view of his olympic size pool complete with a massive rock waterfall. Reid Alexander whose face is everywhere I turn these days, now that his acting career has sky rocketed, joined us while we discussed- girls, music, underwear, and strange um…uh… food habits.

Reid

Jax

Do you two run in any of the same circles considering you are both very likely on the bedroom walls of every teenage girl in America?

Reid: Sure, I know Jax. He’s awesome. Hey, man.

Jax: Hey, uh yeah we end up at many of the same events. But let me say I’m thinking I may be on more bedroom walls than Reid is *nudges Reid with his elbow and chuckles*

Reid: Yeah, dude, you just stay on the walls. *winks*

Jax: You’re right. Walls only. I got my girl.

How do you handle relationships and the spotlight?

Reid: Yeah, I don’t really do relationships. Let’s just say I haven’t found the right girl.

Jax: I on the other hand have found the right girl. Sadie is it for me. It’s not always easy managing my career and a relationship but she comes first.

Reid: *shakes head, smiling*

And what would the “right girl” be like?

Reid: Okay, heh heh, I totally stepped into that one. Um, she’d be beautiful, of course. She’d like to party, wouldn’t get on my case about anything… wouldn’t play hard to get, but not be too easy, either.

Jax: *smirks* you may change your mind about the partying bit if you ever fall in love. For me it’s intelligent, hard headed, spunky, good sense of humor and of course blond, blue eyes and well, Sadie.

Is there a girl that got away?

Reid: Isn’t there always?

Jax: Almost but I managed to fix that problem.

What do you miss about being average? What is something you want to do but can't due to adoring fans?

Reid: I don’t really miss anything. I love my fans, and I love doing what I do. If there’s anything that’s difficult to do, well, that’s part of it and I accept that.

Jax: Going to the grocery store, the movies, or just walking down the beach with my girl. Those aren’t simple things I can do without major planning. Sure I can rent out an entire movie theatre but it takes away from the experience. I love singing and I love my fans but sometimes it would be nice to blend in.

Reid: I don’t want to blend in. And the theater is in my house, across the hall from my bedroom. *smiles at Jax* Your girl might like that…

Jax: Hey now, where you going with that one?

Reid: Your girl, your house, you… unless you’re up for a little competition?

Jax: Keep ten feet away from Sadie at all times. And I have a theatre at my house but I’m referring to the experience of going to a public one. Doing something normal, ya know?

Reid: Joking, man, joking! I’ve seen how you two look at each other. It’s disgusting. *laughs* Nothing’s coming between that. And what’s abnormal about an in-house theater?

Jax: I’m not saying it’s abnormal it’s just isn’t... never mind. Moving on along.

Where do you see yourself ten years from now?

Reid: ten years? Well, I have no intentions of stopping what I’m doing now, or slowing down. I’m filming an action flick this fall, and thinking about taking on more serious roles… whatever keeps my career relevant. I don’t want to be stereotyped.

Jax: Surprisingly I feel much the same way. I intend to keep writing music and singing. However, I do intend to be married by then and possibly starting a family.

Reid: Whoa! *scoots away from Jax a bit* I’m just worried that’s contagious…*laughing*

Peanut butter or chocolate?

Reid: That totally depends what you’re using it for. Sandwiches? Peanut butter. Body paint? Chocolate.

Jax: *Laughs* Dude you did not just say body paint. That’s hilarious. Me, I’m peanut butter. I do not intend to discuss body paint. Sadie would kill me.

Reid: Don’t knock it til you’ve…hmm. Wait. I’m getting a memory of a party a couple of years back… You and that model from Ukraine… *notices Jax’s expression* Ah... nevermind, that must have been my friend John.

Jax: *clears throat* Uh, yeah, um what’s the next question?

Rock or country?

Reid: Rock. Alternative, indie, pop, anything cool. Country is frequently derivative.

Give me a country artist who’s doing something distinctive and original and I’ll listen to it.

Jax: And once again we agree. What he said.

Boxers or briefs?

Reid: C’mon now. What about keeping the mystery alive? Okay, okay. I prefer boxers, but I own both boxers and boxer briefs.... so I suppose the mystery is still alive.

Jax: boxer briefs, no mystery here. That one has already been plastered in magazines all over the world. Some maid at a hotel I was staying at stole a pair of them and sold them on eBay a couple years ago.

Reid: Ha! *bumps fists with Jax*

Jax: We might need to leave that out. Not sure if Sadie’s heard that one yet.

Blond, brunette or red head?

Reid: Yes.

Jax: yes? HA! That’s great. I’m going with blond.

Star Wars or Indiana Jones?

Jax: Indiana Jones

Reid: Paranormal Activity.

Football or Baseball?

Reid: Basketball. Lakers, of course.

Jax: Baseball Yankees baby.

Reid: New York? I’m sure they loooove that in Alabama.

Jax: My dad’s from New York so I was raised a Yankee fan. Sadie doesn’t care much either way where sports are concerned so it’s all good.

Reid: Go ahead and add “Lakers fan” to that perfect girl inventory, because she’d be going to games.

The only explanation was the kid must be an idiot. When Pagan wasn’t looking his way he pathetically ogled her. Then when she glanced over at him, he acted as if he hadn’t just two seconds ago been panting after her like a damn dog. If it wasn’t for the incredibly odd possessive streak I felt toward the girl, I’d make him see the error of his ways. I didn’t like the fact she wanted his attention. I sure as hell wasn’t going to help him out. Watching the disappointed little frown on her mouth made something inside me stir. I couldn’t place it exactly because it was a new emotion. Not anything I was familiar with.

Pagan tugged her book bag up higher on her shoulder as she pushed through the bodies of students filling the halls. I couldn’t stand by and watch her so unhappy. Instead of staying in the background shadowing her like I’d been doing for weeks in order to ease the strange tightness in my chest only her absence could provoke, I spoke up.

“Don’t look at him next time. It’ll drive him crazy.”

Her eyes flicked a quick glance over at me but she didn’t miss a beat. I didn’t like it that her scowl deepened. Granted most people weren’t crazy about me but I wanted Pagan to like me. Admitting that simple fact was humbling and it bugged the hell out of me. She stopped in front of her locker still ignoring me even though I made sure she could see me.

“He’s trying to play hard to get. Kind of proves what a child he is, but I can see it’s bothering you.”

“I’m not bothered,” she responded through clenched teeth and opened her locker.

“Yes, you are. There is this little wrinkle between your eyebrows that appears and you nibble your bottom lip when something bothers you.”

That got her attention. She froze and turned her head slowly to peek at me through her cascade of dark hair. It reminded me of silk. I liked silk. Especially dark silk. The scowl was gone and an odd feeling of accomplishment washed over me. I’d been the one to cause that tiny smile forming on her lips. Why did something so simple make me feel like a freaking king?

“You’re missing the public display of affection across the hall between your two buddies. They may need you to throw a bucket of ice water on them.”

I’d barely glanced over at Miranda and Wyatt. All I could see when Pagan was around was... well... Pagan. But I knew making a joke about her friend’s constant grope session would make that tiny smile break out into a full fledge grin.

“There that’s better. I like it when you’re smiling. If the football kid keeps making you frown I’m going to take matters into my own hands.”

Did I really just say that? I was going to have to watch my words. Before she could respond, I faded away. I wasn’t about to answer to that minor slip of the tongue. She couldn’t see me any longer although I hadn’t moved. Her shoulders lifted and fell back down as she let out a loud frustrated sigh. She turned to walk toward her next class and I was glad she couldn’t hear my laughter. I’m positive my amusement at her frustration wouldn’t please her. But damn that girl fascinated me.

Existence Release Day!

Well the day has finally come. Existence is out there for the world to read. I thought on the day of it's release I'd share a little about the idea and where the series is going. Since I did leave everyone with that "WHAT?!" last sentence.

YA contemporary romance is what I typically read so therefore it's what I thought I'd always write. However, I began dipping my toes into the paranormal books and decided it might just be fun to write a paranormal romance. There are so many fantasy elements out there I wasn't sure which one I wanted to go with. Then the idea of personifying "Death" came to me. I like stories where "Death" is more than an event in life but an actual being.

The name "Dank" wasn't a name I randomly made up. Dank was actually my uncle's name. He drowned at the age of sixteen. I've always thought his name was unique. And Death shouldn't have a common name. He is the ultimate of "unique" so I thought using my uncle's name would be fun.

The name "Pagan" actually has a purpose. I can't explain that right now because it would spoil things for you in the next book. I haven't released the name or cover for the next book in the Existence series but I can tell you this will be a trilogy. The cover and name reveal for book #2 will be released after the first of the year. Possibly even on New Year's Day. Not sure yet.

In Existence you get to see how Death AKA Dank meets Pagan. How Lief becomes a part of her life and the circumstances of her childhood. It sets the scene and the love story for what is to come in the next two books. YES I do leave you hanging at the end of Existence BUT the conflict in this book is resolved. I just wanted you to have a peek as to where book #2 is going. I wouldn't call it a cliffhanger per say because you do get closure to the major issue throughout the book.

I am currently writing book #2. All the main characters in Existence will return. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it.

This week's topic: COVER LOVE

You might think because I'm a writer I am well aware of the old adage "Don't judge a book by it's cover" well… I hate to disillusion you but I'm incredibly superficial.
If a book's cover doesn't catch my eye then I won't read it. Period. UNLESS it gets mass amounts of rave reviews telling me I should read it. Otherwise the book will never be purchased and downloaded onto my Kindle. It just won't happen. I'm not saying this is a good habit. All I'm saying is it's my habit. If you write a good book then get a good cover to go with it.

Since my belief is a book's cover should rock, I went through several cover artist until I found one I could not live without. Might sound a little overly dramatic to you but have you seen my book covers for Existence, The Vincent Boys, and Because of Low? I mean honestly, look at this
and tell me my cover artist isn't freaking brilliant!
Point made.
So I've interviewed the artist who created my book covers, Stephanie Mooney, for this weeks post.

1. How did you start designing book covers?

I've been doing graphic design for years. But designing covers was an idea that a friend gave me last summer, and that's what I've been doing ever since. I love it. I don't know why I hadn't thought of it before. It was just one of those lightbulb moments.

2. How long does it take you to design a cover?

It depends on how complex the cover is. The simple ones can take a day, others can take several. I usually give myself 10 business days to get it right.

3. What are your top three favorite covers that you have created? (And I don't expect you to list one of mine :)

Ha ha! That changes all the time. I could never pick a top three, but some of my favorites at the moment are MESMERIZED by Julia Crane and Talia Jager, FORGOTTEN by Madeline Gobat, and BECAUSE OF LOW... and no, it's not just because you wrote it. ;)

4. What are your top three favorite book covers you didn't design?

OH Gosh. That's a hard one too. HONALEE by Amanda Hocking, INCARCERON by Catherine Fisher, and SHIVER by Maggie Stiefvater.

5. Do you have a zone when you design covers? For example: music you listen to or a certain spot you work or certain snack foods you must have handy?

Yes! I love to listen to film scores and audio books while I design. They inspire me. And chocolate doesn't hurt!

Existence will release on December 13. It's told in Pagan's POV but I wrote a mini prequel told in Death's POV for the YA Scavenger Hunt. Now the hunt is over, I thought I'd post it on my blog too….

“DEATH’S ARRIVAL”

The moment she spotted me, I knew it. Granted, she did a really good job of pretending she couldn’t see me. The fact that she halted in her steps the moment her eyes met mine, then quickly darted past me as she hurried into the school, gave her away. Students walked past me all morning without seeing me, but this one saw me. I stood up from the wooden picnic table, where I’d been sitting awaiting her arrival. I could force her to acknowledge me by becoming visible to everyone else but I wasn’t in the mood to do so just yet. The determination in her eyes intrigued me. If there hadn’t been a parking lot full of witnesses, I have the feeling she would have yelled at me instead of cowering like most humans. The monotony of my existence didn’t hold much promise of entertainment. I’d play her games for awhile. Games were fun to play and it’d been much too long since I’d come across a worthy opponent, especially a female one.

When I’d decided to come much sooner than required to take a soul, I hadn’t been expecting to be intrigued by a mere girl. Although she was the soul I’d come to take, she wasn’t what drew me here early. There was something else here or should I say someone else here who didn’t belong. No, I wasn’t here for the girl just yet, I came to see the soulless. It wasn’t my job to follow the soulless but they were so rare. It had been over a hundred years since the last soulless walked the Earth. He was just a boy, which was expected. The soulless never lived long. They fulfilled their purpose by their creator and were then removed from life. Although he had no soul for me to hear I could still watch him undetected.

His eyes continued to scan the crowd of students. His purpose must be here. Patiently I waited until he found his prey. Almost as if he were the silly boy he portrayed, his attention was claimed by a girl. Ah, but not any girl. He was here for her, too. Her soul was marked, of course, and therefore mine to take. His purpose would be up sooner than expected. Whatever reason the soulless has for watching her will become pointless when I take her soul. Unfortunately, her time is up. Death is literally knocking on her door. Chuckling at my own humor, I silently rapped on the wooden door as I followed her into an empty classroom. Depending on what the soulless was after, I realized I might have to forgo playing her games and just take her soul as planned.

11/11/11: My Top 11 Indie YA Contemporary Romance Reads of 2011

These books might not have all been released in 2011 but I read them in 2011

Coming in at

#11: Cross My Heart by Katie Klein- This one was good but I could put it down and walk away from it then come back later. It didn’t keep me so captivated I burned dinner.

#10: Effortless by S.C. Stephens - I adored Thoughtless which is the first book in this story. I enjoyed Effortless but the drama got to be a little much after awhile.

#9: Sweet Sofie by Elizabeth Reyes- Adore this series. The only reason Sofie’s story came in after her two older brothers stories is because I have a thing for her brothers ;)

#8: Forever Mine by Elizabeth Reyes- Adored this! I am a big fan of the alpha male.

#7: Love Unscripted by Tina Reber- I enjoyed this. It came in at #7 because I like books that deal with movie stars or rock stars. The whole fame thing intrigues me.

#6: Double Clutch by Liz Reinhardt - Couldn’t put this one down. It literally had me from the first sentence and I skipped a few meals just to keep reading.

#5: Always Been Mine by Elizabeth Reyes- My favorite out of the Moreno series. Yummy Alpha Male!

#4: Where You Are by Tammara Webber- Fabulous second book in this series of teenage move stars. Loved the chemistry between Graham and Emma.

#3: Between the Lines by Tammara Webber- This one is a reread. I enjoyed it so much I read it again.

#2: Thoughtless by S.C. Stephens- AH! I love Kellan. I want one! Something about the bad boy singer in a band you can’t walk away from. Lust, betrayal, heartache, and it all wraps up into a happy ending.

#1: Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire- here is my O.M.G. I swear I’ve read this book five times. I will never get tired of Travis. He is the most intense, addictive hero in YA fiction IMO.
